I just got home from work when I took the pic,and haden't degreased them yet. There is always grease there though. After working in the business for 20+ years I don't notice it too much LOL.

When she/he was flaring at the other betta did she have vertical stripes?
Do as kitten said and look out for the ovipositor.

But judging that its from walmart, I would say its a female. Big stores like that only usually want long finned bettas. But maybe they made a mistake and thought it was a female...

she/he is really cute!

It could still be an aggressive female. *shrugs* Keep an eye out for the oviposter, I find that feeding rich foods as if readying a betta for breeding will often show the oviposter if it was unnoticeable before. I'm pondering my new female, too... I thought I saw the oviposter, but she's building nests and being generally aggressive, too.

I don't have ROOM for another male, she's SUPPOSED to go in with the other females in the community tank. Drat it... she SHALL be female! *grumbles*

Well it looks like it's a short finned male fish. Tonight I had to move the 2 betta bowls next to each other and they weren't happy. In fact they were ready to GO, all flared out and trying to get through the glass to get to each other. Oh well

"Very interesting... does 'she' flare with gusto?" see the first picture Though the gills don't seem to flare like my 3 boys. Could a large mega corporation mistaken a common variety female Betta with a male of a rare species of Betta?? nahh She is a lot smaller than my other Bettas, though age my be a factor..I'll try to get some better pics when I have the 5G tank setup, I ordered some Elodia on E-Bay, should get it later this week and I need to re-arrainge my room for my new furniture(and new fish tanks) She'll be fine in her bowl for the next few days, no worry about getting too cold It's almost 10PM and my A.C. is still running and it's set @ 80F Steve

Girls can blow bubblenests, but not usually unprovoked and not usually large ones.

Very interesting... does 'she' flare with gusto?

Interesting :%) The tail fin marking is the same in reality as it appears in the pics. The anal fin marking in the pic is more of an artifact of the picture quality and my amature attempt to clear up the photo. There is a large bubblenest in "her" bowl today.

Karfixer, unless i'm very much mistaken, thats an imbellis X.

see the red crescent and the red line on the anal fin? they are classic imbellis markings.

Lucky find!

(and i'm not convinced its female, so be careful if you try to breed)

A few weeks after losing one of my favorite Bettas to a bloating disease I was getting some supplies @ W@l*M@rt and found this little sweety. She is black with green and red highlights, looks like a crowntail the pic is of her in a temp home-1G bowl- while I setup a tank for her. She is boldly flaring @ my finger LOL

Karfixer - She's full of eggs right now - she's ready to spawn thats why she has the bloated stomach - I'm hoping thats the reason anyway

Your hands look just like my dads - he's a diesel mechanic and his hands and nails are stained from all the oil and stuff he works with

Aw, she's pretty!

You have very dirty fingers No wonder she's flaring at them! She's appalled at their condition.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Stella, the Betta in your sig looks like it has the same condition that took my little pal, the bloated stomach. Did you sucessfully treat him? If so, how? This thread has a couple of pics of him, near the top was him bloated at the bottom was before he got sick.

Here's a closer pic, thought I don't think my digicam is going to be able to get a good clean pic of her. I'll have to borrow my sisters 35mm camera.

Hehe... what a cutie! Sometimes you can find great bettas at walmart. Not often, but sometimes there's really great girls there...
