I just lost my very last betta today. He is the longest living betta that I had. 10 months. I love these little fellas, but I can not bear it when they pass away.
This little fella was in a tank with a male molly. They became the best of friends. When Sprike pass away early on this afternoon, Murray the Molly was so upset, he went around tail slapping the water. I now have him in a tank full of female mollys. He is in love. Sprike showed no symtoms of any disease or illness. His breathing became very shallow, and he got very tied. Like it was old age?.
The water readings were all ok. At least he went peacefully, and I didn't have to put him down. R.I.P Sprike.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.... The posted pictures of Sprike truly show a beautiful, healthy betta specimen....
Some people just don't understand when it comes to fish... They look - and all they see is something swimming around seemingly aimlessly, then they wonder "What's all the fuss about?"... But if they would only take the time and REALLY look - getting past the beautiful color and seeing the true beauty - personality traits, behavior routines, etc....
I'm sure there are even some hobbyists out there thinking I've really gone off the deep end saying these things... And maybe I have - but still this is what brings me pleasure... I love looking at my platy fry - seeing the brave, the fearful - robust swimmers and meek swimmers - the ones who eagerly rise to the top when being fed, the ones who remain at the bottom....
Good grief! While cleaning my 55 gal tank yesterday I accidently brushed my hand against one of my female bettas - and she didn't move!!!! Didn't swim away! Didn't get excited! Just stayed there seemingly content!
As in my previous threads I mentioned my aquisition of 2 male Crowntail Bettas.... While both started out very active - one eventually started behaving rather strangely... buried himself deep into the rocks... didn't eat... etc. So I moved him into my 55 gal tank - and once again, initially he was quite active! Rising to the top - eating - even flaring! But shortly after the move, he once again became almost imobile... Fearful, hiding constantly! My other fish didn't bother him - no chasing, no fin damage - but eventually he died.... It saddened me greatly! He truly was stunning - similar in color to Sprike! I did get another male Betta (splendens this time) and placed him in the 55 gal.... Talk about personality! He too is getting along with the other fish - but hardly ever hides! You see his beautiful red and blue gliding through the water and you truly marvel at his
elegance! I truly hope you don't intend to delete bettas from your life - because they are amazingly awesome fish! One doesn't replace the other, but you can find comfort...

To thine own self be true...

I'm so sorry to hear about Sprike I remember reading about him in other posts, I thought it was so neat he had a molly for a pal. He was such a beautiful betta. I have the worst time when one of my bettas passes, they're such individuals and it's like losing a friend.

Thank you all for the lovely responses. Sprike (if he could had talked) would have be so touched knowing he was thought of as such. I will keep you posted on his buddy Murray and his progress. At the moment he is in molly haven chasing all the females and making babys, so the lose of Sprike wasn't too dramatic for him. But my hubby and I couldn't believe Murray tail slapping. I had Sprike in a hatchery at the top of the water in the same tank, and after he died, Murray was on the other side of the hatchery looking in and tail slapping the water surface. I think he knew that his best buddy just died.

I am so sorry about Sprike. When I thought my betta, Priscilla died, I cried so much. I can't imagine what it feels like to actually lose one. May he rest in peace.
