I have an acrylic tank that is ment for reptiles. It is about 5 gallons. It lookes like it could hold water and I want to get a betta. I would put a whisper internal filter in it with some javafern. Would it work? I think it is probably a but it looks like an acrylic fish tank. http://www.petco.com/product_info.asp?familyid=12031&sku=4258379649&tab=3&dept_id=1007&c1=1005&c2=1007&c3=&ct1=Aquariums+%26+Furniture&ct2=Aquariums+%2D+Acrylic&ct3= My "terrarium" looks exactly like that execpt the top is black and it is more of a rectangle.

I think that it would be fine to keep your betta in that kind of tank - I keep my bettas in tanks like the one shown in the pic - each tank holds one gallon of water - I'm not sure that you will need a filter - The filter may provide too much current for the betta.

...

Description: This multi-purpose home is an aquarium, terrarium, nursery, sick bay, and insect house all in one!

It says aquarium right in the description. Lots of people use them for fish, so go right ahead. If you've used it for another animal like a lizard, you may want to sterilize it first.

I'm actually considering upgrading my bettas' one gallon tanks to one of the larger sizes of theses containers. *nods sagely*

Awesome I will clean it out. And from what I have heard I wouldn't have to cycle it.

Wouldn't have to? Eh... It's big enough that you could, but it might be a bit unstable. If you intend to do 100% water changes, then you could get by without cycling it. I'm thinking I'm going to try to cycle my five gallon, though I don't know how successful it will be.

After taking another look at those containers (not a bad price for the size!), I'm going to have to go and measure the shelves my bettas are on... see which would fit.

I have a 5g that is cycled... it seemed like it took a little bit longer to stabilize but it's okay now. We used fishless cycling so we didn't have to test the water every day (didn't have to worry about killing off a fish) and then when the cycle was complete we put 2 platies (from our other tank) in there for just over a month and checked the water often. It probably took another 2 weeks after the cycle was complete for us to get a handle on how often it needed wc, etc. I've found that a 15% change weekly is fine now, but it is a heavily planted tank with lots of hornwort and that keeps the nitrates under control. Anyhow, hope that helps.
