My eldest betta was purchased last May and my sister's last January, both from chain stores, so it's a guess as to how old they are. Generally, they should live around two years, though it's not uncommon for them to live 4-5 years or even longer.

I've got a male and a female that I've had for going on 2 years now, and 2 males that I've had for about a year. All doing well! My unnammed female I got a few months ago.
Generally, mine seem to last around 2 years.

Of course, when I was buying them I didn't realize that bigger usually=older... I got he big ones because I thought they were the strongest/best

I would guess my male and female that are coming up on 2 years are actually closer to being 3 or 4 years old

I have found if you treat your betta when you bring them home they live longer. You don't know what diseases they could be harbouring. I do a treatment of BettaMax...but this is hard to find now. I have suggested using Jungle's Fungal Eliminator (JFE)for one treatment. Also you can check your water hardness, ph etc. just to make sure it is a comfortable level for your betta.

When you buy from petstores or lfs, you have no idea how old your bettas are. They could be older breeders that the seller is getting rid of. Some of the bettas in the store could be near the end of their lifespan. I don't think you can really know what their age is unless you buy them directly from a breeder.

Thanks for all your replies. Well, now that I know how long bettas live, any conjectures on why mine keep dying? My friend has had the same problem with her bettas too in the past.

I'm wondering how long your bettas have usually lived, because I've had three and I haven't been able to keep any one of them alive for more than 6 months. My oldest betta just died today, I bought him 6 months ago. The only signs of illness were a loss of appetite and color fading near the face. My water parameters were normal (ammonia 0, nitrate 5, pH 7.6, nitrite 0, temperature 78 F) Is it possible he just died from old age?

I've had Gofish for 16 months. I don't know how old he was when I purchased him from the lfs, but he is still going strong.

betta's with good care can easily pass 4-5 years, by the time you get them at the pet store they are almost a year old(depending on the breeder). i had one male for 6 years. before he finally went. and another i had for 4 years, but gave him away, and im not sure if hes still around or not.

what are you keeping them in?

I had one that lived for almost 2 years, might've been longer if I hadn't moved. I think it was too much stress for him.

Currently I have Jim who is almost a year old
