I thoughtI had a safe substrate in my betta bowl...polished river stones just a little bit larger than he currently is, spread out on the bottom. Silly fish was getting somewhat impatient (I slept in a bit this morning, didn't feed him at the regular time) and decided he would dig around in the stones and see what he could find. Managed to move one, which subsequently collapsed and squished him between stone and glass. Scary looking. Fortunately, betta bowl is in the bedroom, and I heard the stone hit the glass with a loud THUNK. Velevet seems to be doing okay, but ouch! I didn't think he could move something that relatively heavy. Guess I'll have to find something else for substrate.

nah, just make it a single layer of those OR add some smaller pebbles to stop things moving around.

Mine have bonked themselves with substrate more times than i would like to recall.

Why, only yesterday, one decided (goodness knows why) to spend a good 3 hours with his noggin wedged in between 2 large river rocks... he was perfectly capable of moving, but i think he actually fell asleep in there

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett
