What happens to your betta as they get older? Changes in behavior? Lowered resistance to disease? Etc etc.

I have a LFS betta that I've had for some time. He was really BIG when I brought him home... at the time I didn't really think much of his size, but since then I've ordered several half-moon bettas from a breeder. When they come, they are about 2 months old, and about 1/2 the size of my LFS betta.

I can only assume that he's got some age on him... and am wondering what I can do to prolong his life, and avoid any old-age related health problems.

(I know the consitpated thing is a big one for older bettas... I've read that on here... he's not had any problem with that. If I don't think he's "done his business" enough I just let him fight with himself in the mirror for a while, and he... errr... well he's not constipated, let's just put it that way. )

Anyway, any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks!

just b/c he is big sized doesn't always mean that he is old but could have been bred for a bigger sized bettas. i have found in my older males that the fins do get ripped up more and don't heal or if anything heal slowly. They tend to not flare and they just float around. well that's my input.

a good diet and keeping his home similarly laid out are probably the main things i can think of.

as he ages, decrease the protien in his diet.

As he ages, his spine will take on an arched appearance. Bettas at this stage rarely live much longer than a few months more.
