Hi everybody. I just have a quick question. How far/long can one safely transport a betta from the pet store to home? I'm asking because I'm going to Springfield (MO) at the end of the month to see relatives and there's a fish store there I've heard good things about from friends who've visited it. I want to know if it will be possible for me to go 100 miles straight home if I find any bettas I can't resist adopting without harming the fish.

The trip takes between and hour and a half (usually) and two hours depending on traffic.

If I ask them to use a really big bag with lots of air in it, would that work? I don't know if I would want to have the bags open in the car. I wouldn't want to risk an escape or a sill. That would definitely be bad for the poor fish.

Would it be even better if I put them in one of those styrofoam coolers? would that help keep the temp stable?

For that short amount of time, the betta should be fine. If you are really woried, the pet store could even put oxygen in the bag, though that isn't really needed. The cooler is a good idea. Fish can spend quite a bit of time in transport. How do you think people get them to pet stores?

True, true. And I know people ship them in the mail, but I'd like to make sure I won't be harming any new babies I get. Bettas are the most addictive fish I think. Everythime I see one, I think "He would look good in a tank by the bed," or "Man, his colors would complement Friedrich's perfectly!"

They should be fine with a 2 hour ride home - My lfs is about an hour and a half away from my house(I live in the boonies) and all my fish make it home just fine.

Two hours should *not* be a problem at all. When I worked at my LFS - tiny little containers, not much water - the bettas were in there for 4 days (min) And they were not harmed.

If you're worried - ask for a lot more air than water it works nicely .
Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I now feel confident enough to be able to bring home any nifty bettas I find.
