I'm so sorry ducky
Sometimes they die without ever knowing a reason
There isn't anyway you can have another fish?

'By the way, I assume you meant "yard", not "yrad" and "torturing", not "torchering". But don't listen to me, I'm only 12.'

I wish I was that witty when I was twelve. No sarcasm intended. Kudos.

Also, back when I used to keep beta males, they belly-upped on me for no apparent reason; I keep beta girls now, and they seem to be a bit hardier, IMO, at least.

Ducky your mom will come around eventually---my mom used to ponder why i was so interested in fish when I already had cats, hamsters, and a ferret, but now she loves my 5in+ BN plec in my community tank- she gets so excited when she walks into my room and sees him sucking on the side of the tank instead of hiding! I've gotten phone calls when I was out saying "Kitty (the bn) was out of her tank today!" Let her realize what good pets fish make, and hopefully Cori Di is right, and you develop MTS. Best of luck to you!
and RIP Elijah

*Hugs* to you Ducky and hopefully your mom will come around in time. I know it is hard losing one of these great little guys but stick with us and enjoy the fish. Maybe when your mom sees how informed you have become she will accept your hobby more.

Tut Tut.

I dont know what you lot were doing when you were 12, but i was responsible for several things, including a horse (my parents paid, and thats it, i did the rest and organised the lot)

Anyone remember Keegan? I've never met anyone so knowlegable on catfishies.

I have been found digging earthworms, but i found farming them to be more effective long term.

Fish in general can be finicky. Bettas are very moody about living in general!

Rubber Ducky, stick around. Learn as much as you can
A bunch of us are planning a get together up your way in January next year, and you are more than welcome (actually, so are your parents if they like ) and maybe we can help you get better set up while we are up that way

I am very sorry about Elijah.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Maybe you should stick to digging up earthworms from the yrad and keeping them till they die rather than torchering a fish!!

- What a shameful statement to make. How could one pass judgement on anyone regardless of age? I agree that there are more kids on this website who are very responsible fish keepers. Some of the most supportive people on this site are a mere 14 or 15 years old and they have already accumulated years of experience to pass along. I have seen adults with fish in their care not display nearly the responsibility nor compassion as I've seen a young person do. It has nothing to do with age - it's a state of mind.

Ducky - I hope you'll stick around fishprofiles.com. Learn all you can and when you get your own house someday, by all means, you can get even with "mum" with MTS (Many Tank Syndrome) . *Pictures Ducky's house with a fish tank in every room*

For now, learn all you can about the science of it all - nitrogen cycle, water quality, health, etc. And, don't give up on mom yet.

How long have you had Elijah? What did you keep him in and how much water? How often did you change his water? Did you put conditioner in his water to remove chlorine and chloramine or are you using well water? If in a tank, what kind of filter did you have running? Did you recently lose power (in the last month) where the filter was not running?

Let's take a look at what may have happened keeping in mind, that sometimes it's out of your control. If it was something like water quality then we can look at what you can do different with the next betta. I'm sure you will eventually get another .

Diane

Not far from me and Rustyblade. We are from the Goldcoast.
It sounds like you are a very responsible young girl. You didn't let MDB get you down. Thats good. If your mum can not be persuaded, then don't fret, there will be another day. In the meantime, continue on in this forum. I'm sure people, and I know I will, enjoy your company and we will share our fishys with you. You don't need to own fish to love fish. I know if my fishys can speak, they'll say hello to you when you log-on. Catcha again soon.
Perhaps if you got your mum to read some of the feedback, she may change her mind. Just don't show her the one about the drama queen. I don't think that will win you any points. Good Luck.

By the sound of it your mum is trying to stop you from being hurt again (thats what mums do) just give it some time and I am sure she will come around when she realises how much joy you had with the small amout of time you had with Elijah.

A 12 year old that cares that much about a fish has already proven to be far more grown up than certain persons in this thread

You're a great girl and hopefully your Mum will soften up a bit at a later date and give in to you because those poor bettas out there need people like you ducky

Thanks, RoboFish.

MDB, everyone has to start somewhere and if all you did as a child was dig up earthworms, that would explain a lot.

And if I was so intent on torturing fish, why would I have come to this website which focuses on the CARE of fish?

By the way, I assume you meant "yard", not "yrad" and "torturing", not "torchering". But don't listen to me, I'm only 12.

that cruel mdb. 12 year olds are perfectly able to take care of a fish. I took care of 2 ten gallons when I was six. Very few deaths in those tanks. I am now 14 and have 2 twenty-nine gallon and a 10gal and bettas. I am also journeying into salt water aquaria now. So in short, I believe your statement to be ignorant.

is a 12 year old capable of looking after him/herself let alone another living creature? Maybe you should stick to digging up earthworms from the yrad and keeping them till they die rather than torchering a fish!!

Well, I tried again and the same answer: NO!

P.S: Extrovert, I already have 2 dogs so I think another one is out of the question.
