this is becoming a hot topic.

What exactly is a Mustard Gas?

I am seeing a lot of brown fish being sold as MG, and a lot of very interesting colours being passed off as MG.

MG is/was? a strain name of a fish bred by Uncle Junkin (Jude Als) and the original colouration was green body with yellow fins.

There is also MG salamander which appears to be a purply colour with yellow fins, but this is harder to pin down.

Whast are your thoughts on the matter?

This is one where I think there's a lot of confusion. The original MGs were basically greenish fish with yellow fins and green edges to the fins. Today anything with yellow fins and a dark body is called MG, except chocolates. There are good, real MGs on the market, easy to find, but there are a lot more that aren't and are labeled as such. It's rather like halfmoons - there are tons on Aquabid, real ones, all the time, but there are four or siz times as many that have spreads of 170 or 130 or 90 and short, bent outer rays and pathetic dorsals but are labeled HM (or "HM geno" which is just absurd on multiple levels). Some strains, like MG, you almost have to assume the person's wrong, unless it's the original creator or someone who traces their stock to him.

If it doesn't have three layers of color (body, yellow fins, edges) it isn't mustard gas. Sorry, but that's the definition as set by the developer - I think he knows! And if it's a purple fish, "Purple gas" or one of those other monikers is a better choice than MG, it's just more accurate (although Gene Lucas hates the proliferation of names, and, well, who's going to argue with Gene Lucas?*)

Yep mustard gas is one of those titles that are way too commonly given to bettas that don't really meet the requirements in an attempt to glorify the betta which is usually to be sold. Little Mousling is correct about all of the qualifications as far as I know. And who in their right mind can argue with Gene Lucas?

MG is just a name, its not an IBC recongnized colour. So like if you were to show an MG it would be in the Bi-colour class. So what iam getting at here is that you could anything an MG, doesn't mean its true but you can do it Its just like Salamanders, BCbetta has a strain of what she calls salamanders, but other breeders also have strains called that. Personally I hate strain names, they just confuse the crap out of people

just my thoughts
