I've been reading up on some of the fish diseases and have begun to wonder... Would it be beneficial to add Melafix (or some other medication) on a scheduled basis as a preventative? OR would this produce a lower natural immunity? I can't help but think there should be something that would increase the fish immunity against disease - somewhat like vitamins for humans....

I wouldn't recommend it... Melafix when overdosed can burn the fish's eyes. If you want to get a preventative then get a UV sterilizer.

I've always added salt and melafix to my betta tanks. Mainly because they are always in some sort of finnage trouble (fin rot, ripped fins on plants because they are psychos, or just my generally bad fish keeping) but also because on teh bottle it says: use when netting. And I net them very time I change their water... so... it just made sense to me. Maybe I shouldn't...

your bugs would build up resistance.

in effect, you would reduce the ability of the melafix to do its job when it was actually needed.

if you want to add something, add a garlic extract.
get a UV steriliser (if its filtered in a way that you can).
heck, add fish vitamins

but dont dose medications preventitively long term, its not a productive exercise.

Do not use medications on a prolonged basis as a way of preventing disease. As Calla said, it is possible the 'bugs' may become immune to melafix, and it will become useless when i problem does occur, and you will need to turn to other medications.
