I have a male Dwarf Gourami, the regular variety with the orange diagonal stripes. I've been looking for a female partner for him for a while as I believe they do much better as pairs. One of the stores here just got in some females but of a different color variety, Sunset I think, kind of a yellowish pale orange.

Just wondering if the male would accept a different color variety female as a mate or should I hold out to get a regular female

the female dwarf gourami are always grey in my experience, on different colours, only the males have the colour. i'd check with the store to see they really are female.

i had a pair only got the female now and she is grey. my female honey gourami is also grey.

This is a url on the differences in male and female drawf gourami. Not only are their colours different, but also their dorsal fins.

I know the differences in the dorsal fin for sexing gourami's. That's why I'm pretty sure there are some females. The dorsal fin is noticeably shorter and rounded at the end.

There are some color differences, the males are deeper colored more orange then yellow, the ones I think are female, while definately could not be described as grey, are paler with the only noticeably yellow area being around the stomach.I have read recently that Asian breeders are now breeding females that have some color but still not as bright as the males.

I do agree I've seen females of the regular Dwarf in the past and yes they were just a plain silver.

I'm beginning to wonder if they could be Honey Gourami but they look far too pale to be honeys and are identical in size and shape to the Dwarf.

Had a look again on the way home. Definately female dorsal fin and definately dwarf.

The males were a light orange, the feamles a very pale yellow. The top half of body and chin had a very pale coloration witha silver sheen under it. The stomach and anal fin were a deeper but still very pale yellow.

Wonder if my Male Dwarf likes blondes

Yes, the male should accept any of the female color var. I wouldn't actually say accept. The wild-type dwarf gouramis don't get along very well at all IME. But I have had a neon blue male and reg. female that got along great.

Tiger Angel,
Thanks for all the effort

Second article was very interesting. You can see in the photos that they are indeed producing some females with color.Actually has I live only an hours flight from Singapore there's a fair chance the fish I'm looking at came from that very farm.

Going to pick up a blonde girlfriend for the little fella on the way home today. I'll post a pic of her if I can later tonight.

Well picked up a female tonight. Definately not shy. Been strutting up and down the front of the tank since I put her in and ate out of my hand at her first feed ]

Here's a pic of the vivacious blonde.

She is beautiful.
I know a good name for her: Shakira, being blonde and a dancer. She also like to strut around.
