I recently moved my betta to a 1 gallong bowl (because he didn't get along with my gouramis). The difference between the water level in the bowl and the top of the bowl is 1.25 inches, do i need a cover for the bowl? Are bettas jumpers?

How about a piece of plastic canvas? Like what you'd use for needlepoint... I gave a betta to my coworker in this big 1.5+ gallon vase. I found a six inch circle of plastic canvas (for the great price of 38 cents) that fits right into the neck of the vase. Perfect!

How about getting some saran wrap, airline tubing, and tape and making the tubing into a circle. Then you can wrap the saran wrap around it to make a sort of cover. Then you can poke holes in the saran for air and even make a bigger hole for feeding. This would work better than putting the wrap directly on the bowl for water changes. You can easily remove it.

My wife bought some plastic mesh that she made covers for to replace the metal screw on lids. That way we don't freak them out when we use to unscrew the lids. These slip over the jar.

Here's some pics:

I use door/window screening. It can be found in rolls at most hardware stores. Just cut it a little larger than the bowl lip and use a rubber band to hold it. You can also use those little clear thingy's that are put under plants for draining (Sorry I cant describe it any better). I found two that fit my bowls. Just be sure that there is air space between the plastic and the water. These can be found at any store that sells plant stuff.

Make SURE you have a cover! Regardless of what it is (In my tanks, they all have built in covers so I have no worries there ) But the plastic needlepoint canvas works great!

I have had a couple bettas jump to their doom ... Didn't find them till it was to late. In other words: EXTREMELY good jumpers, cover the top else you'll be down a betta or two

I like the plastic mesh ideas...safely keep the fish from jumping, allow plenty of air, and look nice.

My boys are all in small tank that came with tops. I had one girl in a bowl/jar-type thing and used a CD.
