I'm thinking of getting a female betta for my community tank (platys and gouramis). Will the female betta be aggressive toward gouramis or the other way around (i heard that sometimes the fact that they are closely related hurts)?

How big is the tank? What kind of gouramis do you have?

It is really the luck of the draw with female bettas, some are peaceful and some are very aggressive. It helps if your tank is heavily planted with many hiding spots.

Still need to know how big the tank is

As I said before, you might or might not get a peaceful female. I would recommend go the the LFS and watch how the females interact, and then pick a non-aggressive one. If you put the betta in and the gouramis start attacking (or visa-versa) then be prepared to move it to another tank.
