has anyone had experience with a flame gourami? whether it's a bully? I recently bought one for my 40 gallon tank -- the petstore said it would be fine, and online the only sources i found said they were good in communities, just not with another flame gourami. They seemed fine for a few weeks now i think he might be bullying my angelfish . . . ??

The flame gourami is a color morph of the dwarf gourami. They have wide-ranging personalities. Some are very docile, others are menaces. The dwarf gourami I had was fine in a commuinity tank. Keep an eye out for the angelfish. If there is no nipping of fins or missing scales, it'll be fine.

first, thanks for your reply ... the angels fins show a small amount of damage on the tip, so i've watched them closely, and it took a long time to catch it, but the angels were nipping eachother! . . . and the flame gourami was nipping both of them! i dont understand because the angels have been "best friends" for over a month, and now all the sudden they're fighting! the flame seemed fine for the first week or two i got him, but i've caught him chasing and nipping now. its not constant, though -- it took a long time to catch any hostility . . . but now what? is there anything i can do? and if i have to return one, will the angels be fine without the gourami? or i dont know?!! please help!!

Before taking any fish back to the store, try rearranging the decor in the tank, and then reintroduce the fish back in. It sound like territorial disputes, and if all of them can redefine their territory, it might be better. Also, create as many hiding places as possible. Hopefully this will work!
