the females are grey with a darker grey line down the middle on the fish.
the males are brown/red with black and yellow fins.

Younger ones are pretty similar. The females tend to be a little bigger, and sometimes have a thin brown line (as mentioned) along their sides. If you see ones with blue on one of their fins at the LFS, do NOT buy them as they are most likely dyed artificially. Mature males when spawning will sometimes have a deep blue underside, but you'll never see that at the LFS.

You can also look at dorsal fin shape...in most gouramis, a more tapered, pointier-ended dorsal fin is found on males, while a shorter, more rounded dorsal fin is found on females...

i used to have honey gouramies and i could tell them apart by there color. My male was golden and the female was brownish.

that's weird, i have 3 female honey gouramis and they are all an orangy/yellowy colour.
does this mean they are died, god i hope not.
does anybody know?
