can a male betta coexist peacefully with a female in a community tank?

Simple answer: NO, bad idea.

They'll probably fight and one or the other will most likely be killed. In most cases it's the female. In odd cases it's possible to keep adult siblings in the same tank but you're much better off not risking it.

when I lived in my parents house we use to have a 15 gal with 2f and 1 male betta they never really bothered eachother the male kinda stayed up in one corner ane the females swam around togeather and he actually spawned with one of the femals at one point. I think it just depends on the male bettas additude. Lisa

STOP!Just stop! males and females can be put into a small tank and colive. First when bettas fight wiether males fighting males or males fighting females they hardly DIE fighting. i have kept a male in with a couple of females. But what needs to be learned by SOME PEOPLE is that it u can't always trust what you read in books that bettas should be kept by themselves. It depends on the male. Some males are mild and others are aggressive.
