what size tank is it in?
Heated? Filter?

when it comes to keeping anything with betta. go with fish that are not fin nippers or end up with very unhappy betta.
also no fish that have large colourfull fins, guppies etc as these are sometimes mistaken as other bettas = dead guppy.
then don't go for fish that are likely to have the same areas in the tank like gouramis.

the best things fro betta tank are, shrimps, cories, platies and swordtails.

hope this helps.

i'd stick with the male betta then get a couple shrimp, with some grass plants and pots for the betta to hind in.

does the filter have a powerful outlet? the betta isn't a strong swimmer and they prefer either no filtration or a very slow outlet.

Sorry, but do you have any idea of the tank volume (gallons)?

Some bettas aren't bothered by filters for some reason.

In a 3g the only tankmates you could have are ghost shrimp, which the betta might eat, or an ADF. It's really too small for anything else.

i'd leave the filter to see how the betta does. i'd keep the betta on his own he will be much happier, from my experience.

ADF =african dwarf frog (i think anyway)

Male bettas do great with a variety of other fish..as long as the other fish aren't aggressive.but in a tank that small I'd stick with just the one betta. I have a male betta in a small tank probly same size as yours. Bi-weekly water changes and keeping him warm make him happy.
