can a pearl gourami and an angel live together in the same tank? is 29 gallons too small to have them together?

You can but I wouldn't in a 29 due to possible aggression.

Do you think the angel would be aggressive towards the gourami? do you think I could amend this by getting the gourami first and starting with a very small angel?

If this is with the dojo- i wouldnt- both need much higher temps.
Id pick one of the two if its another tank- After much swapping and retanking gourami/ angels- in a 55, I couldnt get 2 that got along. they will either fight as adults, and youll end up with one, or the stronger will harrass the weaker till it just hides, wont come out, and is miserable.

Yes they can providing the tank is large enough and there is plenty of cover. Both fish can be aggressive especially if males.
Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

I put 2 honey gouramis instead. No angel yet, I'm going to wait on that.
