Two of my betta girls share a 5g. I recently added what I feel are quite a few floating plants to the tank.

I realize bettas need to get to the surface and they're not having problems doing that, I'm just wondering if there's such a thing as too many floating plants with a betta? Would they rather have more open surface space?

Here's a pic of what the tank looks like:

Hiya Theresa!

I'd say that if they can get to the surface, all is good. I have the same concerns with my betta boys... there's hornwort in some of the tanks and it's just getting massive.

I split one bunch of hornwort and divided it between two tanks (there's four tanks, but the hornwort in three of them died off) just before I left for vacation. A week later and one of the bettas is doing gymnastics to hop OVER the hornwort to get to his food! Silly hornwort... it either dies or overgrows the tank! Time to split it up again.

So... my suggestion is that if your bettas can easily get to the surface and can get to their food easily, I'd leave well enough alone. Unless they seem peeved by the amount of floating plants, I'd say you're okay.

Well, I had to do a big clean up/water change in their tank today. So I took out all the floaters, removed some icky bits & dead bits, and ended up with about 25% less plants. They seem happier about it so maybe I did have too much in there.

just as long as the females can get to the top to take a breath i say that alot of floating plants shouldn't hurt.
