He's so pretty, poor thing At least he's in a good home now.

I like Chopper A while ago I had a peppered cory that got rather torn up and I named him Chomp.

When I found my girl this morning all I had onhand was Melafix so I started treatment with that. I don't know if there's a huge difference in treating bettas with Betta-fix over Melafix, I may still buy some to have just in case. You could always do a search on the forums or check out the Hospital forum itself and see what info is there.

Thanks for the info about the jars. They're approx 1g?

OMG u think thats bad, you should see what my girls did to one!
I had a 10gal with about 5-6 females. They were all getting along fine untill one day...I came home and found that one of the females was lying on the bottom with her fins all torn and her stomach ripped open and eggs eaten out!!]:| I have heard some other cases of this aswell. But now I never keep females together!

Sorry about your girl!

Sorry to hear that. In my (limited) experience when fish get beat up like that they don't survive, they can't seem to recover from the trauma, even when the actual injuries aren't life threatening. I'll second Mn_Rick's comment, this isn't a natural enviroment and can't be treated as such. Dogs and cats can find food and water without human interference either but they don't make good pets and in many states it is criminal not to take proper care of your animals. Unfortunatly, fish don't get that sort of protection.

Theresa,

Sorry for your loss.

I don't know why some people think that it fine to leave things alone, and think that it's a natural thing to let them decied pecking order. For one thing,The way that we keep them is not their natural habitat. There's has to be a time where we have to step in.

Agent_Alice,

We got him that way at the store. We have been treating him, and he's coming around. The tail is starting to grow some He's really active and his tank always has a huge bubble nest.

I'll post another pic in a few weeks

it is import for us humans not to interfear

If I hadn't interfeared she most likely would've been dead in a day or two. Even with removing her from the tank and treating her she still didn't make it but at least she died peacefully And at least I felt I did something for her, there's no way I could've left her in that situation.

Yep the jars are 1 gallon storage containers. And I did post in the hospital forum about our new one, and they say that Betta Fix is watered down Melafix that cost more. So, save your money.

I hope your girl makes it. Good Luck, we both need it.

Quick history: I had 2 females, blue & red, living together with no problems. A while back I added a very small pink female (maybe half their size). Red started nipping at pink so I removed red for a few days, rearranged the tank, and when I put her back in everything was fine.

Last week I bought another female, a red/blue mix. Red-who is definitely the dominant female in the tank-checked out the new girl but pretty much left her alone.

So I thought everything was fine until I went to do a water change today. Red did quite a job on red/blue's fins, poor girl is quite a mess I immediately took her out of the tank and started treating her.

I can't figure out why it took almost a week for the agression to show up. I'm also wondering if it has something to do with color, that the new girl was so similar to the dominant girl.

Anyhow, here are a few sad pics. Just wanted to send out a warning that even when things seem to be fine they can get bad quickly

WELL, she got her torn-up fish. I'll give you the link at the end of this. Also she got me 2 bronze cories for the 10 gallon. And a Mickey Platy (told you she was a Disney freak) for our other 10 gallon.

The glass jars you can get a Walmart for $4.00. It makes a cheap tank, and they stack well. She's making covers out of meshed plastic that slip over the top in place of the metal lids that screw on.

Here's the link to the poor fish she brought home. She calls it King Triton. (I call it Chopper, and asked if she got a half off discount... J/K, I'll take good care of it)

As you can see the poor fish has NO tail fin at all. She got some Betta-Fix to help, and we have Melafix too, but the Betta Fix is I guess better. Any ideas? We're open. You might want to try it on your female.

Oh that's such a neat setup, I really like the big jars I'd like to do something like that with out computer desk but it's at an east window, so it gets the morning sun.

We're in a small place too, a rented 2 bedroom townhouse. Tanks in the living room, kitchen, one on the dining room table

I'd love to see pics! Bettas are so addictive. Except for a period of time when I was fish-less (with my ex ) I've kept them for over 20 years

Other than the girls I have 4 males now, including my first CT.

Here is a link to my 'betta city' which is right next to the computer desk.

I should send you pics of my computer desk. I have 6 right in front of me . They love it when I sit here. They are only in gallon containers, but they get changed every 5 days. Someday when we get a bigger apartment they'll get bigger tanks. What they have now is better then the lil cup, with the yellow water that they were in. One is lucky and is in the 10 gal w/ the cories. If my wife come home with the chopped tali one I'll send you a pic. It's in worse shaope then your female is. There's NO tali fin at all.

Thanks

The poor girl is such a mess but is still so happy. IMO females have even more personality than male bettas...the personalities, colors, and who knows what-they definitely have something that keep a bunch of us hooked on them

I have her in a 1g bowl right here on the computer desk with me. Maybe it's because I 'saved' her but she's just thrilled every time she sees me.

I'm also concerned because I have a fish order that's supposed to be delivered tomorrow, including 2 more females. I'm very concerned about putting them in that tank. I may end up adding them and if I see any problems take the red female out again. Who knows...

The tank has a few rock/cave structures and silk plants. I think I may also but more plants and maybe rearrange the tank before adding the new girls.

Theresa,

I'm so sorry to hear that . Here we just talked about it the other day. I'm glad I pulled mine out as soon as I seen the first nip.

I hope that she heals. I was just told by my wife that she's gonna bring home a male that we seen this weekend that had it's tail fin totally gone. She wanted to bring it home the other day when we seen it, but I hold her that we can't save them all.

We have 10 here at home and 2- 10 gallon tanks in our 1 bedroom apartment (also a cat that loves to watch the fish), and she has 2 bettas at work.

She had a hard time not forgetting the one that we left. I told her to go ahead and if it's there to bring it home, and we'll find room for it. (I'll take a pic if she does... it's pretty sad)

What is it with these Bettas that you feel that you have to save one that you see needs someone? Idrive a school bus and might just give a few to some older kids that would like a pet. That way we can get some other good feelings about what we're doing.

Good Luck, I hope she heals
