I love blacklights. Will they work in an aquarium that also contains live plants?

Will they work in an aquarium that also contains live plants?

As in "Growing Plants With Blacklight" ? Sure not
As in "Night Light" ? Maybe, but most people that like a night light use the blue LEDs that are available everywhere to simulate the moon shine.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

Hi,
Actually "Black Light" is Ultraviolet Light and is NOT
good for neither man nor beast to use on a continuing
basis. Continued exposure to UV light will ruin your
eyes and those of the fish.

UV light is also no good for the plants. They need
white, sunlight for growth and not just the one component
of sunlight, UV light.

If you want something "different" I would suggest the
new "Moonlight" lamps for the fish tank.

Wfish,

Given that there are about 3 months between original question and your reply, I assume you must have given it some really serious consideration

Anyway, glad you got off that wagon

I just recently learned that aquatic plants in particular are quite sensitive to UV light. It can completely destroy the chlorophyll they need for photosynthesis. Terrestrial plants have adaptations to avoid this, but a lot of aquatic plants are pretty helpless.
