I once had a list of salt tolerante plants but lost it. Does anyone know if sagittaria, in particular narrow leaf sagittaria subulata (dwarf) is salt tolerant?

I have it in two betta tanks and need to add salt. I would only be adding about 1-2 tsp in the 2.5 and 3 gallon tanks. This is quite low.

Hi Diane,

I bet you forgot to look at the site for the company you
just bought your plants from!

Yes that plant is salt tolerant, and here are others:

You know, now that I think of it, I raised bettas for years
for my LFS and I never added any salt. Why are you?

Frank

I've had these two bettas over a year and one was inherited after I saw how neglected it was and going through a case of fin meltdown. You know, the kind where the fin just disintegrates overnight. I was able to correct it after several different attemps with everything from melafix to harsh antibiotics over a 4 week period on the one.

Everything was fine in their 2 gallon, bare bottom containers. Then, I moved them each into a 2.5 and 3 gallon tank with UGF's. Within 1-2 days, the blue one underwent fin melt. He was quite stressed by the experience so I can only gather it had something to do with the transfer. I had done everything the way I would if I changed his water, which I use to do 100% weekly. Same temp, aged water, etc went into the tank. I'm still battling it with some success using bettafix daily, but it happens all over again out of the blue. I'm not sure if it is temperature swings (I try not to leave light bulb on as it raises temp up to 6-7 degrees in a matter of 2-3 hours), then drops in less time overnight.

Everything was going fine with the red one - the one that originally had a meltdown that I corrected. Until I did a gravel vac and nearly sucked him up twice in about 2 seconds. I didn't get him good but may have clipped his tail without realizing it. The very next day he had a fin meltdown.

I want to get salt into these tanks to help them through this as I know it helps keep osmotic balance with any open wounds in the fins, scales or elsewhere.

I'm looking at putting both of these guys into a 5-7 gallon with UGF and a divider, but if stress is at the root of the meltdown, I don't know if that will work.

I'm glad I found your post. I just added Dwarf Sag on Sunday, and considering adding some salt for my new little army of shrimp. Think I have to use Marine Salt though.
