Anyone know what would cause the older stems of Giant Hygro to go brittle ... like snapping celery .
I know this plant gets pinholes in the leaves if it dosen't get enough K .
Is this another symptom of K deficency?

Hi,
I suspect that you have an "old" plant as this is normal
in many plants. The brittle part eventually becomes so
"wooden" that nutrients fail to be transported through
that part of the stalk and the plant snaps off leaving
the upper portion to float off and eventually re-root itself.
I'd trim the plant several inches above the brittle
discolored part, and then take several cuttings and plant
them. This is a version of trimming stem plants as they
grow to the surface in half and planting the tops.
Meanwhile the older, rooted section grows a new top and
continues its way to the surface, and we cut the tops off
again, and process continues....Until the lower section
becomes noticeably a darker green and the tops don't seem
to be the same quality as before. At that point its time
to uproot the original plant and replace it with one of
its younger tops.

Frank ...Thanks for that ...I've done exactly that ...leaves a big hole in the scape as you will see in this weeks update .
Probably shouldn't have done them all at once I suppose ...oh well live and learn .
