Is it good or bad to vacum the gravel in a planted tank? Its a 55 gallon with i would say 25 small fish. Its got quite a few plants not heavily planted, but enough to cover almost half the floor space.

Hi Gourami,

but enough to cover almost half the floor space
... and the other half should be vacuumed, at least in my opinion. You may not have to do a deep vacuuming, but you should at least get all the yuckies (poop, leaf litter, etc) of the top one inch.

Why would you not want to vacuum?

You should definitely try to vacum as much as you can when you do water changes. If I havn't gravel vaced enough, after a few weeks I start to get green water from excess nitrates that the plants can't suck up fast enough. Also, lift up driftwood and rocks or other hardscape you have and try to vacum under them once in a while, otherwise you can run into serious water quality problems as uneaten food and other debris naturally collects just under the edges of these things and can cause toxic polluted areas.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...
