Mystery Plant - Help | |
katieb Fish Addict Posts: 697 Votes: 69 Registered: 03-Jul-2004 | Was in my LCS today and saw aquarium plants, packedged in plastic tubes with gel at the bottom where the roots of the plant were. One of the plants was called "Kyoto fern"...or something along that line. I havent found anything about it online, have you guys heard of it? I'll do graffiti, If you sing to me in French. |

I think it may be one of those plants not truly aquatic but sold for fish tanks anyway, it would probably die in a year at most. That drives me crazy, my brother has one of those variegated bamboo's sold for tanks but they keep them emmersed at the store, it's going to die in his 55g. I told him to get one of those plant/fish vases at Micheal's Crafts and plant it in there, sans fish. Then it would continue to grow for years and years. LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | katieb, From time to time we have this question popping up here at FP. Although I don't remember the details, I believe the common response was that these plants are ok for the tank. Most of them are like Java Fern and such hardy plants. It may be that not all "types" are truely submersed plants, so identifying the plant by its real name is advised. Try to search by key words through the general and planted forums, maybe "gel" "packed" or something like it. Hope this helps, Ingo |

katieb Fish Addict Posts: 697 Votes: 69 Registered: 03-Jul-2004 | Success! Its O. Japonica, a terrestrial plant. Most of the plants in the gel were different varieties of swords, wisteria, and java fern. They were a little pricy but appeared healthy. I'll do graffiti, If you sing to me in French. |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | katieb, Tetratech has Modno Grass in his small tank rather successfully. Here is A Link to his thread. On the linked page you can see a picture of it. We debates for quite a while if the plant is any good for a tank, but under the right conditions it may very well be (read more about it in that log). Ingo |

katieb Fish Addict Posts: 697 Votes: 69 Registered: 03-Jul-2004 | Thanks for the links, everyone. I have not made the change from fake to live plants(yet), but I figure I'll leave mondo grass to the more experienced aquarists. Hmmm maybe Ill just plant a forest of wisteria and call it "Wisteria Lane" I'll do graffiti, If you sing to me in French. |
