Hey All,
I just wanted to share my new joy with you all.
It is a nice little stylish 2g nano tank, with micro power
filter, superb 9w compact flourescent bulb. Topless of course,
but I have made my own suitable top from materials I had around.

So far I have designed it with smooth rounded natural color
gravel (cuz i really like that), and have planted 2x anubias
plants (1 nana, 1 something else), that were in my 75g growing
OK but could be better, and a small amazon sword in a clay pot
that has been slowly slowly growing in my low light 25g to
help it grow (will be moved when it gets too big, its like 1-2 inch tall
right now).

This is an unheated tank, however, my house stays quite warm and
even temperature, about 72-76, with 95% of all days remaining 74
throughout day and night.

Right now I have put used media from my cascade power filter on my
10g, (some filter floss), and have put 2 pearl danios in the tank to
cycle it, and a few cherry shrimp to keep it clean, and 1 apple
snail temporarily to clean up some algae that was on the anubias plants.
The snail will be returning to her 25g home once the algae is cleared up.

I am also going to buy another one (only 20 bucks on sale for a $80 tank!),
to use at my office. Same temp
conditions, perhaps different plants, and maybe a tahitian moon sand bottom
in this one.

Anyway, so what I am wondering about, is c02. I will need to do c02 on my home tank for it to be planted nicely. I would like to try some higher end plants like glosso, riccia or similar. I would like to make a DIY C02 system for this tank.

I was thinking of using a pop bottle the 500ish ml size. For a diffuser I was
thinking about getting a new twisty hard plastic straw, cutting it down,
and securing it to a small pop bottom top for a diffuser bell.
This would be nice and small and easily hideable in a back corner. I would
also silicone a suction cup to it.

Are there any other considerations for such a small nano planted?
Will I need to worry about algae? Or will the cherry shrimp keep the algae
down?
I could possibly add an otto for algae if needed.
So, opinions, thoughts, ideas, welcome! This is my first "advanced" tank,
and I want it to turn it out right.
P.S. I think I have decided to go with Killifish, due to Mikedmatthews suggestion,
and there being a killifish study happening with my local aquarium club, with
some very interesting types of killies available.

It sounds like a wonderful tank, but I'm always hesitant to put CO2 on a tank that small -- it's way too easy to overshoot and suffocate any animals in there or get a ridiculous pH crash.

Hi

I had the same dilema when setting up my 3.5 gal planted tank... I eventually decided to go with flourish excel for the carbon source.

For me a soda bottle DIY CO2 would have been too much hassle & too unpredictable on such a little tank (not to mention potentially smelly as I swapped out bottles at my office desk), and I just could not justify the outlay cost for even a miniature pressurized system.

The excel fits the bill perfectly for my little tank and I use so little of it each day that the bottle will probably last me more than a year. I just use a plastic syringe to get an accurate dose.

As an added bonus, with excel there is none of the additional equipment or hoses etc in the tank that would take up valuable space and ruin the look.

Good luck with your nano - I'd love to see pics of it once it's up and running to your satisfaction.

The only issue with Excel is I have used it,
and it caused severe outbreaks of staghorn algae.
