You uys are always very helpful, so I have another question. The pre packaged plants from petsmart and petco, they come in a clear plastic tube, do I put them under the gravel or attach them to a rock or wood?

wel that depends as to what plants they are that are in the tube. if they are just bulbs then they need to go in the substrate from what i have heard. But it depends on the plants.

Thanks for your input as always, Shane

They are shoots. There is amazon sword, kyoto grass, umbrella plant, wisteria, peacock fern, and white ribbon plant. It does not say how to put them in the tank.

If there are any with bulbs then plant straight into the substrate. float the stem plants until you see new roots. If you have any plants that are growing off a central stem or root then those need to be attached to a piece of DW or Rock and not buried in the gravel

I've used the Java Fern in a tube from petco with great results as its a hardy plant. No snails or algae. Removing the plants from the tube can be an experience though.

Java Fern can be attached to a rock or wood. Just be sure not to bury the rizome in the substrate. Doing so will kill the plant.

I have not tried any of the other plants. The amazon sword is a plant that can grow huge and is usually suitable for larger tanks.

Beware that some of the grasses and (white ribbon) plants are not true aquatic plants. They will not thrive submersed in an aquarium for long.

I just got the Peacock Fern, I bought 2. I did a Websearch for its Scientific name Selaginella Wildenowii And it is not an Aquatic plant.

However there is some differences of opinion out there. So Be careful because of this I if I see any that I like from now on I am going to write down the Scientific Name go home do a search and maybe go back for it.

How are yours doing BTW?
