Actually frank I've seen weeping willow branches develop roots in only a few short days. The type of willow used of course will make a difference as well as the time of year. I'm curious as to if the article that suggested this did trials with other terrestrial plants that do well with roots submerged in water. Coleus is one that comes to mind....quite likely because I have some that's been sitting on my desk in the studio for well over 4 months because I never got around to planting it .

Hi,
In case you have not seen it, here is a link to a site
that deals specifically with Green Water.
http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/greenwater.html

It deals with the causes, cures, of Green Water.

Frankly, as long as it would take for the willow branches
to grow roots and effectively begin to take up enough
nutrients to make a difference, I think the tank would
crash before hand. Once green water reaches its peak,
the algae generally all die out very nearly at once, and
the resultant die off, creates a huge loss of oxygen and
in crease in CO2 as well as other toxins that can result
in a massive die off of the fish.

Willow branches might be a way to prevent it, IF the
branches are placed before hand and grow along with the
tank as it matures. Needless to say, you would need the
lights suspended above the tank and no cover so the
branches are not kept submerged.

Frank

I've had green water just a couple of months ago. To get rid of it I brought the light cycle down to three hours light per day for five days and then increased it slowly with one hour every other day. After about a week to a week-and-a-half the water was clear. I kept increasing the light slowly until I was to an 11 hour light cycle. I haven't had any problems with cloudy water since.

Thanks Jason, the lights out is my next move if this doesn't work. When you did lights out did you cover the tank as well for 5 days?

When i had Green Water, i didn't switch on the lights for 5 days & only fed the fish a few times. After i did a 25% water change & solved the problem.

You can also add some floating Plants to suck the nasties in the water.

The idea behind the willow is that onces it develops roots it has so much "suck up" power compared to aquatic plants that will deprive the algae of it's food.

This is the 3rd day of using it so far. I have not seen any improvement, but I didn't except to until I see some roots develop. I'll post a pic later in the day to see if there is any change.
