Is there a difference in the two? The reason I ask is becasue today I bought what was sold to me as java moss to put on my driftwood and rocks but after looking at pics of both it seems I have both?

Thank you FRANK for the site it helped.Sorry I did not provide a description before here it is. The supposed java moss has strands with little tiny "leaves" while the supposed Xmas moss has big "leaves" sticking out lol I hope this makes sense. I drew a pic of the strands.

Hi,
You drew that?
Durn kid, ur good! I can't draw a straight line
without a ruler, and then I forget my finger tip placement
and sometimes wind up with "bumps" on the line.

Hi there

Xmas moss has triangular like fronds but tank temp can really affect the way it looks. It will look like regular java if tank is too warm or growing conditions need work. My 'sample' is in a bottle and looking pretty stringy, once I get it into a tank etc it should grow more healthy.

It's also common for 2 types of moss to be mixed together, usually by accident.

In my experience, it's quite easier to grow xmas moss than java moss, it will thrive in any regular tank, tends to prefer more light than java, but it will also grow faster, attaches faster and it will do great moss walls.

The real difference is that xmas moss will form ramifications as opposite to java moss which is more “stringy”, and like single stemmed. Adapts great to warm water or cool water, I have it on planted tanks and also betta tanks, no heat and thrives in both, only difference I can notice is a slight color difference, in cold water it's darker.

Here is a pic of one in a heated tank
