I don't know what I did wrong. I have a java fern in my 55gal. I don't have it rooted or tied to anything. (so the fish pretty much push it around when they want to.) It is usually tangled up with a anubia in the front of the tank. Well, the java fern is branching off babies. I found one of a decent size (1 1/2inches) stuck on the filter last week. I tied it with black thread to the driftwood in the 40gal. It is completely dead today. Did I tie it too tightly? Was I only suppose to tie the roots?

I see more baby shoots. I'll try again later, but can someone give me a good tip?

I couldn't say for sure. Maybe it died of shock from being stuck on the filter inlet or something in your other tank wasn't right. I will be watching this thread as I have a Java fern with 6 new plants on it and I would like to keep them for a piece of DW I want to add to the tank when I have some fern to put on it.

Hmmm, java ferns have a rhizome that you should probably make sure not to "choke" if you tie it to something. Next time I'd try only tying the roots.

It should have grown. I only every tie with 15lb nylon fishing line. The reason is the Java Fern is a very slow grower and the nylon does not rot away.
I tie the leaves as well. It must be tied firm otherwise it might not take off.
