hey gentle plant folk -

i'm looking to buy 2-3 new plants for the 6 footer - i'd like to know which are the largest plants in the sword family? my tank is 22 inches high and i'd like to get some plants which could get that big. scientific name would be great too, as petshops and online have so many different names!! any help most appreciated.

Jase,

Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae would be a good choice for a tall plant in your aquarium. It resembles the swords (echinodorus) but this crypt is much more slender and less dense that a sword. It will give you strong vertical lines without the bulk of the swords. Great plant and it should be easily available in Oz. Go to http://www.tropica.com for a good rundown on this plant and any of the echinodorus.

Echinodorus Grandiflorus up to 32in
Echinodorus Bleheri up to 20in
Echinodorus Osiris up to 25in

Those should work, in general swords can grow up to 20 in depending on conditions

Rubin swords generally grow about 24" or more... I've seen some absolute monsters. They don't really need much light, either.
