oh yeah, I dont doubt that he was a hitchhiker, and I can understand that he's hungry since I haven't put that much in there for him to snack on.

I just really didn't like seeing him in my polyps.

Joe Y you mean? THere's like 10 Joe's in LIRA.

A guy in my club, Chris, who breeds seahorses has both cultures going. He's been helping me with my seahorse plan, so I dont think he'd mind helping me set up a phyto/rotifer thing either.

I dont really have too much of a need for them now, but I guess it's better to get 'em established so you've got good populations going when you actually DO need them.

Great, another thing to spend money on! When does it end.

Lights come in mid August BTW...

And sun polyps are now untrained. ]:| Ever since that stupid hermit crab...they've been reluctant to open during the day. Go figure.

I'm finding all cool things in my tank now though, especially at night. Copepods, a pink anenome crab, baby brittle star (I think) and some others. Mushrooms too, growing from just natural sunlight. So cool.

Ever thought about having Joe help you set up a Phyto culture and a rotifer culter? I know he was doing both, dont know if he still is or not.

I guess that's true Nate...I'd just be scared to put them right under the halides. They seem so small and delicate.

Also, I was alluding to the fact that my tank will be filled with other corals when the lights come, and some with sweepers so placement might also be different because of that.

Right now the tank is only getting natural sunlight, and I dont really have to worry about placement. When my lights come in (mid august ) things will be different

No they wont..as long as you have good flow on them to keep detrius from building up on them you can have then anywhere in the tank that you want. Just because they are not photosynthetic does not mean that they cannot tolerate high light levels. Trust me they can and stay perfectly healthy as long as you are feeding them.

Ordering in some PE Mysis and Cyclopeeze for the little guys. Ever since the incident with the hermit they're more reluctant to opening, but when you break out the food, heheh.

Right now the tank is only getting natural sunlight, and I dont really have to worry about placement. When my lights come in (mid august ) things will be different.

I think I'm going to be picking some of these guys up from a buddy in my reef club on Friday.

I plan on feeding brine and mysid I think.

I read the coral of the week article on Tubastrea.

Now what I'm wondering is the best way to feed them.

In the Book of Coral Propagation, Calfo suggests removal from the tank into a bowl where they can stuff themselves without releasing tons of extra nutrients into the main display.

Other people suggest target feeding...but Calfo says a turkey baster might be kind of frightening.

Anybody have experience or thoughts on the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks a lot.

He probably just hitched a ride in on the rock you got....and wasnt trying to do anything to the coral, but was probably just trying to get some mysid himself.

Ermmm I think we have a problem.

Last night I put some mysid with garlic into a syringe to feed the tiny guys. I got a couple of them to take food, so I left the SS off for awhile and sat down on the couch next to the tank to read.

A little while later I look up and there's a hermit perched on my frag! ]:| The nerve! I'd never even seen or put a hermit in this tank before. I freaked out and moved him to the sump. I dont really know what his plans were...

I guess I have to ID him huh.

Thoughts.

Thanks for those links, I really needed them. I've got some ordering to do, what else is new. My inbox is filled with more order confirmation notes and tracking numbers than you can imagine.

And I think they are trained, as I haven't seen them closed yet. They're very healthy and an amazing orange, I'll put pics up in a couple days maybe.

Feeding brine will be fine, but I would use a vitamin supplement and soak them before you feed them. The mysid is of course better than the brine because it has a higher protein content. PE mysis IMO is the best on the market.

Here is the link to the vitamin supplement that I use.

http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=BE1131&ast=&key=

Here is the link to PE mysis...I believe you can buy it through their website, or you can find a dealer close to you. Im glad I dont have to worry about where to get it

http://www.mysis.com/index1.html

Feeding depends on what types of foods you feed the tank. I would feed the whole tank cyclope-eze daily in combination to my homemade food that also contained cyclope-eze, seaweed, brine, PE mysis, vita-chem, and usually some scallops or clams thrown in and blended. With that feeding ritual I only directly feed them once a week and they were growing/spreading like mad. I would start off with daily feedings and maybe go to feedings every other day and see how they do.

Are they open during the day and stay open all day, or are they not "trained" yet?
