30 minutes is plenty, especially if the fish store is in the same vicinity, sharing the same water source. It was probably, as you said, just a bad batch. The general consensus is, unless you desperately need the fish and they run out fast, wait a week for the fish to stay in store, THEN purchase.

Dont go on the myth about the larger the school the less nipping - Well you can try it but eventually some fish some time will get nipped

First add the Corydoras to a decent school & then i would go with Rummynose Tetra, but a school of Silver Tip would be cool aswell.

The more Tetra's you have, the less fin-nippers they'll be. What do you have in the tank at the moment?.

Ive read that Pristellas are nippy also. How do you keep this under control? A larger shoal like 6-8?

It seems like the ones I like (Pristellas and Serpae) seems to be fin nippers.

I will however take another look at the rummynose.

Rummynose Tetra's are great fish, very beautiful & easy to keep in good quality water, with weekly water changes.

Silver Tip Tetra's are a bit nippy, but i would choose 6 Pristella, if the Rummy's are not available.

I read that Rummynoses are very particular about water quality.

I like the Pristillas but they have a larger body and Im only working with a 20gal high.

I would love to have silver-tips but i have read that they can be nippy. I refuse to have anymore nippy fish as they WILL nip fins and in turn kill fish.

I have a 75g and its mainly a tetra tank. I recommend pristellas if you like them - you wont be dissapointed. A beautiful schooling tetra is rummynose's. Some tetras to think about are lemons, columbians, flames and many more.

Have fun choosing and enjoy

Well I went in today and talked to one of the managers who I trust (Ive been going to this place for 10 years)

I told him about my lemons and how they had a white patch behind thier dorsal before they died, and I showed him one in the tank that looked the same. He said it looked like a bacterial infection so that was probably the cause.

He told me to observe my other tankmates for a week and if there are no problems he will give me any 6 tetra I want for free.

Now to decide what I want. The silver-tip are kind of cool but so are the priscillas. Its going to be tough because they stock 12-14 types of tetras:%)

And to add to CoL's post, if they sell quickly like many tetras do, ask them to hold however many you want so they are guaranteed to be there when you want to buy them. Some places will ask for a down payment to hold fish, but if you really want them it will be worth it.

All to often I've seen people come in and just observe fish, but then they find that the fish has already been sold by the time they come in to actually buy it.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I bought 7 Lemon tetras over the past 2 days (4 and then 3 more) from my LFS. 3 had died in the past day (one yesterday and 2 overnight).

My water seems fine:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 10

I just performed a water chage after removing the carcases.

My snails and cories dont seem to be suffering though.

My LFS is down the road from me, about 5 minutes away.

I realized that I have been putting them in way too soon.

Next time take your time & try to stress them the least possible. Acclimating is very important & next time be more patient.

In retrospect I probably acclimanted them poorly. But whats weird is that I put some long-fined cories in to same way and they are fine.

Im going to get another 3 and try the following.

Float for 30 min
Add 1/4 cup of water from aquarium into the bag every 10min for 30-40 min.

Hopefully this will help.

Sometimes the stress from moving or bad acclimation can kill off new fish. How did you acclimate them?
