Are these two the same species? More importantly, if you bought, say, three white and three black, would the six all form one school?

Thanks in advance

Yep, they're the same species of fish, Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. The white skirt tetra is a color variation of the black skirt, which is the normal form.

The tetras would probably school together at least in part (especially if you only have three of each color), but they'd prefer sticking to their own type. As such, it would be best if you would provide at least six or seven of each color type if you plan to house these fish. If the different color G. ternetzi did school together much, it would probably be due to stress and/or being kept insufficiently-sized schools.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

At work we have a 40 Gal. tank that has tons of both back and white's. They all school together..... but the more numbers you have the better off you will be for this.....
