I love my buenas aires testra, Ive had them forever. Mine are very sturdy and at the same time pretty. Very active and seem to have a specific personality amongst them... love to be feed and attempt to trick me into feeding them... i love them but that may just be me...

Ah , Buenos Aires Tetras.

Plus points include:

[1] Hardy and capable of living in a wide range of water conditions;
[2] Tough enough to be used as dither fish for Convict Cichlids and other similar bruisers, and consequently can be kept with a surprising range of larger fishes that would make a snack of smaller Tetras;
[3] Colourful and active, will present a truly stunning spectacle in the right setting, esepcially if fed with colour enhancing foods;
[4] Will eat a wide range of foods (but watch them truly sparkle if you can feed them live foods!).

Minus points include :

[1] Biggest of the Hemigrammus Tetras at 3½ inches, and thus need considerably more space than 'typical' aquarium Tetras;
[2] The same toughness that makes them capable of living as dither fish with Cichlids means that they can get nasty toward some smaller fishes - watch them like a hawk;
[3] If you try to breed them, the females will beat up the males - sometimes with fatal results - so again they need to be watched!

If you're prepared to live with their capacity for rough and tumble behaviour, exercise care with the choice of companions, and give them decent swimming space, Buenos Aires Tetras can be a surprisingly good choice for those who like something a little different. Whatever you do though, DON'T put them in with Neons or other small, delicate fishes unless you want the small fishes to be bullied, or worse still, eaten!

I just have to say I aggree with all the plus, but disagree with some of your minuses.
I keep my Buenos Aires tetras with many smaller fish, white clouds, neons, cardinals, glowlights, pristellas, and danios, and they never pick on these fish, nor any other fish at all. I find them to be very very peaceful and not nippy at all, towards each other or other fish!

Mine spawn regularly, and the female (huge female) never beats on the males at all. Seems the usual tetra type spawning.

I love these fish. They are my favorite of all the tetras, big, colorful, (they have a green shimmer as they age), peaceful, and very active.
They eat plants, and love them, so try to keep high levels of veggies in their diets, or supplement with fast growing tasty plants like Bacopa Carolinia. They love it!
They are truly the best tetra!
