Hi! What are some tetras that would be compatible with angelfish (2 of them) in a 46 gallon? I'm looking to put maybe 2 school of tetras with the angelfish...

Any tetra that isnt nippy or too small is a good choice. Rummynose and lemons are a couple of my favorites

Most Tetra's are compatable, but if you have fully grown Angels, try to find big bodied Tetra's & that are not very nippy.
Rummynose, Emperor, Black Widows, Cardinals, Lemon Tetra's are a few of what you can choose from.

depends on the size of the angels, i have small angels with neons and cardinals, but i dont think that it will work with adult angels.

If the angels are small

Large Cardinal Tetras
Lemon Tetras
Diamond Tetras (sometimes nippy...depends on the certain fish you get)
Large Neon Tetras
Emporer Tetras

If the angels are large already

Large Cardinal Tetras
Emporer Tetras
Lemon Tetras
Diamond Tetras
Bleeding Heart Tetras
And if the tank is big enough Congo Tetras (I don't say them with small angels because they are large and active and may frighten the angels when they are smaller than the congos.)

Only difference is if the angels are large you can't keep small neon tetras with them. The angels mihgt possibly mistake them for food. Cardinals are a little big to fit in the angels mouth though so they would probably be fine.

If the angels are small you can get large neon tetras and raise the angels with them and they shold get along fine because the angels won't think of them as food.

I have had adult angels with the following tetras:
Glowlights
Neons (small ones got eaten though)
Pristellas
Buenos Aires

Glowlights in my 2 years experience with them are
quite shy, not nippy at all.

I can't beleive i forgot glowlights and flame tetras. They would also be good for this set-up. It's just I hvan't seen many good flame tetras around here so mind mind wasn't really on them:%)

And I kept glowlights with other cichlids and the glowlights are the least nippy tetra I have ever owned.

Supposedly, Neons are the natural food source for Angels. I would assume that once an Angel got a taste for a particular tetra of smaller size, it will expand what it considers the “natural food source” to include that kind as well.

So I agree, it should be a bigger type of tetra, and, for the sake of the Angel, a non-nipper.

I happen to have 5 black neons and lemon tetra and serpae tetra....and a BA tetra.... in my experience non of my tetras are bothering the angels fins or anything like that... but that is probably just my specific tank... I also have other fish in the tank and everyone gets along... no fighting or anything like that except the occasional fight between a school for dominance which usually causes no damage... it depends on the temperment and size of your angelfish and other fish inside the tank!! good luck

You cannot trust fairly large Angels with fish as small as Neons and Glowlights -- but even the big ones seem to leave fish the size of (for instance) Rummy-Noses alone. There seems to be a certain size threshold above which Angels do not regard other fish as worthwhile prey, and will not even harass them -- and below which they very definitely do regard them as potential entrees.

I have successfully kept cardnials with a medium sized angel (4inches). The trick is to add the cardinals first, let them grow and then add a small angel. My angel will not even go near the cardinals and has no interest in them at all. I think the following tetras would look really nice:

Lemon tetras
Rummynose tetras
Cardinal tetras
Diamond tetras
Black neon tetras

Here are some interesting things that one should note about neons and angels. Perhaps home bred specimens will eat neons, but they are FAR from their "natural" prey:

Most silvers and resulting strains are Brazilian, not Peruvian, and hence, would never have seen nor have recognized neons as "preprogrammed", if you will, prey. Peruvians are generally more parasite e and relatively delicate (most are caught with a bird parasite and thusly released). Thus, they are rarely imported.

Neon tetras are stream dwelling fish. They occur in lightly flowing blackwater. Peruvian angels are primarily whitewater dwellers, frequenting enclosed swamps or relatively stagnant floodwaters, heavily accented with bogwood and vegetation (usually sidegrowth).

Gut analysis of angelfish from around the peruvian amazon have revealed that their diets consist primarily of crustacean and awfuchs matter.

While some predation may occur, all signs point to the fact that neons are not a staple in peruvian pterophyllum diets.
