Can anyone give me info on this species? Are they hard to find? Can they be put in 29 gallon community tanks with Rams or Gouramis? I have only seen a picture of them and they seem quite stunning. Thanks.

Here's a link - is the fish you're talking about? If so then you should be fine with a small school in a 29 gallon tank as they stay relatively small.

Yeah, they're fairly common little fish. They are pretty closely related to lemon and black phantom tetras, like to be kept in schools of at least six, and are fairly hardy. They can certainly be kept with gouramis and rams, and will be happy in a 29 gallon tank.

They are indeed pretty nice looking. In fact, they're hot sellers at the store where I work mainly because of their attractiveness. Add to that their easygoing nature and hardiness, and you've got a pretty good community fish. They might nip at long fins when they feel the compulsion, but they're nowhere near as nippy as serpae tetras.

They are indeed pretty common in California, and seem to get along with their tankmates in the stores just fine (although I've never kept them).

Rosies are drop dead gorgeous. But don't let the somewhat insipid colours in the stores fool you ... they're a bit like Lemons, only less so, in that they really come into their own in a planted aquarium. Put them in with decent planting, then feed a mix of colour flakes and live Daphnia for about six weeks, and they turn into absolute jewels. Good quality Rosies are utterly stunning. If I had space for them, I'd get them. The best ones look as if the cerise-coloured fin rays in the tail are made of little rods of gemstone. And, not that difficult to persuade to spawn either if you give them a good home. They still show a reasonable amount of colour in a bare dealer aquarium if they're good specimens, but you won't see them in their full glory till you put them in a decently planted aquarium and settle them in with some live food. Do that and be prepared for them to blow your socks off.
