I bought what I was told were Brillant Rasboras. However, all the pics I have saw on the net of BR's do not look like the fish I have. The fish I have look like the main pic on the profile of a yellow tetra but this fish has no yellow on it. It is silver/white, very shy, has a faint white outline on its fins. It does not have a dark line through its middle like the pics of the BR's I have saw. I looked all through all of the fish on here and cannot find anything like them. The body and fins are most like the yellow tetra. They also do the "jerk" thing like tetras do.

Any ideas??
I posted this topic in another forum also but thought Id post here too since I think this fish is a tetra.

Hey ladie, it is ahrd to say from your description but maybe
it is a silver-tipped tetra?

(source:http://www.solodvds.com)

It could be a lemon tetra I suppose. Since it is a enw
addition it's colors are more than likely faded due to stress.
Keeping an eye on him over the next few days to see any
changes in coloration.

HTH,

EDIT: also please do not create more than one thread with
the same topic. If it needs to be in another forum ask a
moderator to move it there.

no. I called the LFS I got it from and she said Brilliant Rasboras have either a black or gold stripe. Id say maybe on the gold stripe and I cant see it due to stress but I didnt see it in the store either. She siad it sounded like a Congo tetra but mines fins arent like a congo. However, she said congos get about 4 inches. if this is true, then mine are very young still, a little less than an inch, and it may be that its fins arent developed. But I looked up Congos and I dont think thats what I have either, I may go back in there today and show her what I have an try to get a better answer.

Can you at least tell if it's a Characin or a Cyprinid? That would help immensely in the identification.

Characins almost always have an "adipose fin" -- a tiny little additional tab of a fin on the upper edge of the tail section (in front of the main tail fin, of course). Cyprinids, I believe, never do.

I can also tell you that Brilliant Rasboras have an absolutely and totally different body shape than Yellow Tetras. The former have an elongated, slim body, while the latter have that vertically high and flat body that allows them to turn on their horizontal axis with amazing speed.

What I CAN'T tell yet from your description, unfortunately, is what your fish really is.

OK. These fish have a tiny little fin right before their tail fin starts. I guess thats what you are talking about.
So, that would mean these fish are most likely tetras. I called the LFS today and she said they were congo tetras. But congos have long pretty fins, almost decorative. These fish ahve regular fins. I have to go back in there in a few days and I am going to show her the fish.

Some kid waited on me. I should have known he didnt know what he was talking about when he said as long as a tank had run for 24 hours it was ready for fish!

It looks just like a yellow tetra without any yellow. Or a diamond tetra with regular fins. The diamond tetra on here in the profiles, in the main pic, looks just like my fish. However, the additional pic of the diamond tetras have fins that are longer than my fish.

Im going w yellow or diamond. Maybe they are just too young to show their full finage or colors yet.

Female congo tetras are just a somewhat plain yellow color with short fins and they can be quite a bit smaller than males. They do somewhat have a more reddish top like males but it's hard to tell until they are quite grown. Here's some comparison pics I came across in a quick search.
The top fish is a female, the back fish is a full colored male, and the bottom 2 are younger males. They also aren't fully reflecting the light so you can just make out their red streak and a little blue. This site has an individual pic of each. [link=http://mike-edwardes.members.beeb.net/Pinterruptus.html]http://mike-edwardes.members.beeb.net/Pinterruptus.html" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]

I add fish to my tanks immediately after setting them up with everything running. Waiting is for people who don't know what they are doing...

Thanks Sham. That looks like what I have. I only paid 1.98 per fish for Congos!
