Oh, it has been a LONG time since I received roses. I was kind of leaning towards the black neons myself. I think the harlequins, yes I ras referring to them, are rather interesting looking though. I will be getting them as soon as I know that everyone in there is doing well. I will let you guys know how they look! If I decide something different I will let you know. Knowing me I might jsut changfe my mind after all. I am a female after all

Ok I ended up with 10 neons becasue the guy at the LFS gave me a few free ones. I am adding to my school of von rios but I think they got a bad batch becaue 2 f them died the day after I got them so I am going to hold off on finishing that school for a few weeks. The will be fins because there are 6 of them and 10 neons and thats all that is in the tank right now. I will try to get some pictures up when I figure out how to get my pictures on my phone on to paper or the pc.

I all ready have cories to put in my tank I am going to add more to the school of 4 that I have now. The cardinals didnt not fair to well. They caught a case of ich and they all died so I am going to go back to the neons. I have had good luck wiht them in the past. I am going to get a 3rd school of either black neon tetras or maybe pencil fish. They look very similar but the pencilfish will probably be a little more out going than the other tetras in my tank will be. Thanks for the help.... One other thing. Would it be okay to out a clown pleco in with these guys? I will get a piece of driftwood for him if so.

My two cents' worth:

Stick to your current species, make it 12 each of the existing Tetras, and pop in 8 or 10 habrosus Corys (they're small, so you could have 8 to 10 of those, and Heidi's habrosus are a non stop comedy act in her aquarium )

I can tell you that both Black Neons AND Harlequin and Espei Rasboras really have their color brought out beautifully by a black background, whereas light-colored backgrounds don't show them off well at all. (The same is true for Glowlight Tetras.)

Of the whole lot, I'd say go with the Espei Rasboras if you can find them -- and they're getting lots commoner now in the stores, usually under the name "Lamb Chop Rasbora" (while the Harlequins are often called "T-Bone Rasboras". The color on Espeis (and Hengeli Rasboras, which look identical) is a good deal more intense than that on Harlequins -- although they also seem to me more delicate.

Hey, those are pretty cool. I don't think I have seen them around here before. What can you tell me about them? I saw them on your posts about your tank, which is awesome looking I might add. I wondered what exactly they were.
They might be an idea. I have noticed that most of the fish have been hanging out at the bottom though.
I might look into some other ifhs to fill up the top half of the tank instead of sticking with jsut tetras after all.
I never really thought abtou them sticking at the bottom really.
Thanks for those ideas please keep them comin!

Christina,

Well, if you are still thinking about the Harlequin, here is a fish that I find prettier, the Harlequin Rasbora Espei . They have more orange with a purple hue in the males at mating time, which in my tank is about 24/7 .

How about a school of pencilfish? Beckford, marginatus (dwarf), trifasciatus, etc. These have similar personality to tetras (some even have more IMO) and have very pretty colours. Additionally they're normally top-to-middle dwellers, which would probably make the tank look more even (instead of having a whole bunch of middle-to-bottom dwellers like most tetras).

I have a 25 gallon tank. I am trying to decide what other type of tetra I want in my tank

I currently have
6 Von Rio Tetras
6 Cardinal Tetras

I will definitely be adding
6-8 cories

What other types of tetras should I add. I really want to stick with jsut tetras in this tank. Probably something smaller that I can put in a school of 6 as well.
What would be a good mixture with this?

I have black gravel and live plants. I will eventually be putting a black background on the tank as well.

What do you think?

dvmchrissy,

But you know that roses are given in odd numbers.

Ok, so then you got black gravel and you will have a black background. I would say Black Neons .

I think they would contrast your other fish better than Rasboras (if it were Harlequins that you had in mind).

I would replace the fish. I am a little OCD in some ways so having an odd number would bug me. Plus I think 6 is a good number personally. I totally get where you are going, the only thing is whether I have 6 or 10 fish it would not make a difference because I would replace it not let it dwindle down to nothing. I guess my quetion all along was really what type of tetra would be best suited for this tank with the other fish I all ready have in there?
Thanks

dvmchrissy,

Well, I assume you really want your 3rd school, so go for it .

But one more concern about this setup: What if one fish dies (something that happened to me quite a few times with schools the size of 6)? Are you planning on adding 1 or do you let the school shrink in numbers? You know where I am going with this. You are more flexible with unplanned deaths if your size is 10 in each school.

They almost all kind of school together anyway. I was thinking either Rasboras or Black Neon Tetras. They would look really great with the groups I have in there I think. Would it relly be that bad to add a 3rd school instead of adding to my other schools? I am not wanting to get a totally different type of fish. They will all be smaller tetras not big ones. Also, my tank was sold as a 25 gallon. I am beginning to think that it might be a 29 gallon tank actually. Anyway, I would really liek to add a 3rd school of fish. Hopefully I am going to be getting a much bigger tank, maybe a 55 gallon tank? Then I could add to each of the schools, and make them larger schools.

I would add more Tetra's & Corydoras & have 10 Von Rio Tetras, 10 Cardinal Tetras & 10 Corydoras.

Christina,

I completely agree with Sirbooks, two schools of maybe 10 tetras is enough and better than a third school of 6. Remember that 6 is the minimum suggested for a school (some say 5 though) but not necessarily the best size for comfort.

And one group of 6 cories (same kind) sounds fine too.

This all together would give you about 26 fish in a 25G, so you will have to be willing to take some heat on the stocking .

So just tetras and the Corydoras? Personally, I'd just go with the two tetra species you have now, and one type of cory. You can increase the size of the groups to about thirteen each for the tetras, and eight to ten medium sized (two inches maximum) Corydoras. You'll find that the fish will be happier and healthier in the larger groups, and the tetras will show improved color and will tend to be bolder. Flame and cardinal tetras both look great with the kind of background and gravel you have, as their colors will stand out. Larger schools of one or two species of tetras look better than smaller schools of many species.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."
