yeh. so if he's got a 33gallon like me. the required filtration is a fluval 204. And RBP's at adult size require 15g per fish. so if he wants she can have 2 piranhas. not being argumentative. Just confused

piranhas r powerful yes but they r not dangerous nor viciaous
especally red bellies
they r not that active unless feeding but do require more them 20gallons per fish
ther are however some piranhas that stay smaller only reaching 6-8" although not so common in the trade
there r also fruit eating piranhas to that r very nice
but for a smaller tank smaller tets wood b better suited

my vote is for cardinals/neons and rummynose tets with a school of harliquins to occupy the upper regions

I concur with SirBooks. For Piranha to be happy in an aquarium, they need to be kept in a decent sized group. This means a minimum of six. And at 12 inches each, that's 72 inches of fairly muscular, chunky fish to accommodate. Even more chunky and muscular than some Oscars. And we all know what size aquarium adult Oscars need

Six full sized adult Piranha (assuming we're discussing the most commonly kept species, Serrasalmus nattereri) will need a LOT of space, as they're pretty active fish too. 100 gallons should be considered a baseline figure for six of these.

For the original poster's aquarium, a decent sized shoal of smaller Tetras is the way to go. And there are plenty of species of those to choose from (over 100 to my knowledge not including the recent weird and wonderful introductions such as Kitty Tetras!).

Yes, "juvenile and sub-adult". Adult piranhas can reach a foot in length, and I certainly wouldn't keep a twelve inch fish in a 33 gallon tank. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the red-bellied piranha is a schooling fish. That means that they should be kept in groups, with six or more being preferable. There is no way that a school of piranhas will fit in that tank.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Tank Requirements:
Juvenile and sub-adult specimens of this species should be kept in a tank of at least 20 gallons (80 liters).

"correct me if i'm wrong"

Here I go:

"A Dangerous, agressive schooling fish. Only keep piranhas with other fish (including other piranhas) in a very large tank as they become intollerant of other fish in confined spaces."

"Potential Size: 30cm ( 11.8" )"

"A huge tank is required."

These are from our very own profiles. Personally, I wouldn't keep a 12" fish in a 30 gallon, let alone a 10. Something like this would be more suited in a 100 gallon.

Sorry about that. When i scrolled up to check the little male/female sign i saw it wrong. i did edit it. correct me if i'm wrong but Pirahnas require 15 gallons each. Some people argue that they need 20 gallons each.

"if he wants she can have 2 piranhas"
It looks like someone is confused on more than just fish...

I don't think the poster wants to worry about upgrading the tank in the near future. When you suggest fish, you should stick to ones that will be able to fit in the tank. Piranhas will outgrow a 30 gallon tank.

i have an empty 125 litre tank, in the stages of aquascaping it and what not.

It will have a fluval 304 using a surface skimmer for the current.

lots of java moss, java ferns and amazon swords as the plants, not sure about rocks or bogwood? any suggestions?

i really cant make my mind up on what shoal to get. what catfish/cleaning crew

although i do want to have a few shrimp in there

so i shall leave it up for you to suggest things for me

thanks

2 red bellied piranhas. Thats good filtration for a 125. i have a 125 with and i'm only using a Fluval 204 and it's fine. If you're not a piranha person i'd get a moon blue light. black gravel. black background. And whack a shoal of cardinals in it. it's up to you in the end.

There's all sorts in that MSN Photo Album, not just fish shots

But, as well as the Beckford's Pencils, there's a good photo of one of my Cardinals, several Lemon Tetra photos, and of course the huge collection of Panda Catfish photos with spawning and fry shots

Most of the faeries are my own artwork, by the way

Looking for something different in the Characin department?

Let me introduce: Beckford's Pencil Fish. Nannostomus beckfordi.

Believe me, you'll never be bored with them. Take a look at my specimens in my MSN Photo Album. Skip forwards to see each photo & comments.

Tough little blighters they are. Feisty too. And the males can develop spectacular colouration as they grow older. Especially if fed well on live and colour food.
