I have a fairly new, planted (not heavily planted, more like...moderately) 29 gallon tank with 8 pristella tetras. Eventually I'd like to have some sort of small gourami and some cories in there. Is 8 tetras a good number, or should I get a few more?

Also, with 2 gouramis, 8 pristellas, and 5-6 cories, would I be able to put a pair of cherry barbs in, too?

I haven't had a community tank in at least 13 years, so I'm pretty used to goldfish but not too sure about anything else ;-)

Hi Satinandtat,

Your selection of 2 dwarf gouramies, 8 tetras, and 6 cories sounds pretty good to me. I am sure that they will like it in the planted tank. I would suggest you get (or have) small leaved plants and some floating plants for your gouramies to build a bubble nest. 8 Tetras is a nice size for a school in a 29G.

With the barbs, I would hold off for a while until you have slowly stocked the fish mentioned above and then see how the whole situation is evolving. They might be a little too much (IMHO).

Anyway, welcome at FP, hope this helps,

Ingo

PS: What plants and light do you have?

I think a pair of cherry barbs would be fine in a tank like that.

If you havn't decided on which cory's you want yet, go for 6 pandas

Oh, and welcome to Fish Profiles

Sounds good . I agree with Litte Fish on waiting to add the barbs. Slowly introduce fish so the bacteria colonies have a chance to catch up. I like your stocking so far and I think that would look nice. Another nice type of cories which are very active are schwartzi cories. You could also add a small school of ottos depending on how long the tank has been established.

Introducing the fish slowly is very important. First add the 6 Corydoras & 2 weeks later add the Gourami.
