Are there any tetras, besides neons and cardinals, that could live in a 5g (minibow) with a male betta? The tank is planted, heated, and filtered. I have neons already in a 10g with a male betta so I am looking for something different, but I don't know anything small enough.

Ember tetras stay small (about the same as Neons or even slightly smaller) and a small group of them would probably be ok in that size tank.

Tetra's are schooling fish & so they need to stay in a group & 5 gal. is too small for a group of Tetra's.

Yeah, you'd need a species which doesn't grow past three centimeters. Cardinal tetras are too large, and you said that you want to go a different way than neons. Flame (ember) tetras as suggested above could work, as could lemon tetras and maybe silvertips. At any rate, I would not suggest more than five or six tetras for that tank, and all should be of one species.

I was only going to do a small school. Most likely 4-5. And I would only do one kind of tetra. Thanks for the suggestions.

Your thinking of this little guy [link=http://fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/haraldschultzi.xml]http://fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/haraldschultzi.xml" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]. Would probably work but never seen it around. I don't think 4 fish or less makes a school. It's just a scattering of a few odd fish that don't show alot of the behaviors they do in a bigger group.

Good point Sham. I have never seen the harald schultzi tetras or the flame tetras in my area. I will just leave him by himself. I am just glad he is enjoying his new home and isn't so timid and jumpy like he was in the 1g. Thanks for all the suggestions.

If you're on the lookout for dwarf Characins for a small aquarium, allow me to introduce you to these lesser known but enchanting little fishes that deserve to be FAR better known and which (if you can find them) should be what you are looking for:

Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri - 30mm length
Hyphessobrycon georgettae - 20mm length
Hyphessobbrycon minimus - 25mm length
Phoxinopsis broccae - 25mm length
Carnegiella myersi - 25mm length

Of these, Hyphessobrycon georgettae and Phoxinopsis broccae, if you can find them, are gorgeous little fishes, and well worth the hunt.

In the case of georgettae, it's tiny size means you could probably fit 8 in there if you could find them, provided you were diligent with maintenance.

Worth a hunt ...
