Yes cardinals can go in a ten, maybe 6-8 of them would work out well depending on what other fish are in there. Provide lots of plants as they like plants and dim lighting. The more plants the better. They will occasionally hide amongst the plants but when kept in larger schools they will feel more secure.

They certainly can but they would prefer live plants. I would go for 9, providing there are no other fish in the tank.

I've found it extremely difficult to keep cardinals alive in tanks without live plants.

In my experience they do absolutely fine in a tank with fake plants....very first fish I got in my 29 gallon were cardinals and had the for over a year til I moved...they do prefer live, but they have no problem with fake. They should be fine with about 8-9 in a 10 gallon

And, like said above...use a bit of floating plants at the surface to help dim the lights...they don't like bright lights.

I've had them with plastic plants, and they did just dandy. Doubled in size in five months or so.

What exactly are all your plans for the tank, Importfan?

I haven't had any live plants in a long while (since I had to transfer my c. perugiae into my ten gallon), and the cardinals are still going strong.

Ive had great success with live plants & cardinals.

re school size maybe start with 10 and see how you go. It literally is the more the merrier. And dont forget the live bloodworms Theres nothing quite as cute as a cardinal attacking a blodworm twice its size
