i'm in a bit of a dilemma at the mo... i currently have a community tank with sterbai corys, royal whiptails, marbled hatchets, black phantoms, red phantoms, diamonds, and pristellas. but i'm starting to think that a species tank would be cool - the sterbai and royals are staying, of course, but i'm thinking of getting rid of the rest and getting 50 rummy noses...

it's a six foot tank (300 litre, 80 US gallons), planted and in the process of becoming heavily planted...aside from the ubiquitous cardinal, what other tetra might make a great species tank inhabitant?

You could have a species tank of pretty much any tetra you chose. Most of them will be only too happy to be kept in a huge school, and will get along just fine. A notable exception is the blue tetra, a bunch of these guys would just end up fighting all the time. Rummies would be a good choice, just remember that they can be a little touchy. Were there any others in particular that you had in mind?

Liverpool Museum had Rummies in a huge aquarium alongside Discus and Cardinals. When you've seen something like 200 Rummies in one shoal, you've seen something special! Can't be sure if that was the number, but there was a BIG shoal ... you try counting them when they're constantly on the move!

Mind you, this WAS something like 1,000 gallons, so there was space for a decent shoal!

Goodness, Cal, why do you always get the good aquariums there in England?

Anyhoo, up the marbled hatchet school, lose the rest, and dump in both cards AND rummies. .
