It's one of the Congo Tetras -- there is a new, orange-eyed species that has just recently been turning up in the local stores. (In fact, I believe there are several at my very well-stocked LFS.) I'll try to find out a little more.

It looks almost like a black neon, except for the top fin.

Initially, I looked at this and thought Copeina guttata, partly because of the elongated shape. But the large scales caused me to revise this. I then thought Arnoldichthys spilopterus, but that usually has a redder eye than this. So, over to you Bruce!

However, if it's a new African Tetra, I doubt it's a Micralestes species, because they're not usually as elongate and torpedo shaped as this (cf. the familiar Congo Tetra).

Of course, it could be a new Arnoldichthys species ...
that would fit the body shape and large scales.

I plan to take that picture to the LFS that had the little guys tomorrow, to double-check on this. But I'm virtually certain I'm correct.

Turns out I don't have to do so. Here it is -- the Red-Eyed African Characin, Arnoldichthys spilopterus:

http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?id=5247

http://www.zierfischverzeichnis.de/ordnungen/characiformes/alestidae/arnoldichthys_spilopterus.htm

No doubt there are better photos of them elsewhere on the Web; but this is definitely what I saw at the store, and what your photo shows. They've actually been around for a while, having been discovered in 1909, but they've been rare in the stores until now.

So it was one of the species I hypothesised about then? Hmm, nice to know the old memory still works

Old memory? I was under the impression that these fish are relatively new. The large aquatic depots around here have only, I believe, in the last month or so started stocking these, jellybeans, and false congos. Then again, Britain does get imports on a more frequent basis from Africa than we do.

Arnoldichthys spilopterus was featured in the 1970s Braz Walker pocket book. Whether it's new to the States is a moot point, but it's been in circulation over here for some time if you're prepared to trawl Characin societies or ask for special orders from some of the bigger tropical fish suppliers. Not especially rare, but a good way from being a 'bread and butter' shop fish.
