Did I mention I was cleaning? Note: Thanks go out to Mez for providing identification of the critters. Hemidactylus maboui |

I'm pretty sure it is part of the phylum Basidiomycota, just ba There were five or six of these big masses in about a 10 foot square area, so I can't imagine the hyphae network that must be beneath the tanbark. I love fungi. I wish they had a mycology course at my uni. |

Several species are highly iridescent, whilst others are enormous in size by usual beetle standards. The centipede very DEFINITELY looks dangerous. It looks as if it is a Scolopendra species (this Genus is found throughout South America, and several species are also present in the Central American fauna as far north as southern Mexico) and ALL Scolopendra species are venomous. Indeed, they are potentially dangerous to Man, with the biggest of them all, Scolopendra gigantea, which is a 12-inch monster of a centipede, being capable of putting an adult human being in intensive care in hospital with its venomous bite. The scorpion I can't identify at this stage. However, one general rule of thumb I've been told about scorpions from people in the know (including some professional invertebrate zoologists at my Entomology Society) is this. If the pincers are large (as they are on the Emperor Scorpion) then the venom from the sting is likely to pose relatively little danger to humans. Small pincers, on the other hand, usually implies a fairly potent venom. The claws on that specimen are fairly dainty, tweezer like affairs, so I'd hazard a guess that it was potentially dangerous to Man. Hope you exercised due care and attention when removing those creatures! |

He was caught in a local river last November... he me http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y22/PoisonWaffle/fuzzy.jpg I may go bug hunting tonight to see what kinds of fun critters I can find around the house.
