Hello to all.

The computer repairs and upgrade took longer and more $$ than I expected. Still a few things to do but a technican is doing them for me at our home at very good rates.

What I had done cause a few extras to be done it all went like this.

First install DVD burner.
Upgrade Ram to 1GB but the old motherboard would not take it.
Replaced Mopther Board and found it had capisitors (Sweating) possible over heating.
Upgraded to 300GB hard drive. This created a very unusual problem. I had the first edition of MS XP I had all kept all the service packs and updates done.
It did not like the new 300Gb for some reason, on checking MS have released a updated XP which will take higher GBs.
Also an extra fan has beenn add at the base and front of the tower there is a vent there but it was too close to desk top and most times I had books in front of it (this is what possibly caused the over heating) Now the tower is 20m above the desk top and nothing in front.

Now comes putting it all back together again as the old HD is now a "Slave Drive" therfore all my old info has to be exported to the new HD plus all the extras I have to reinstall.

I hope to have it fully running in a few days.

After running it for some time and making sure I have all the old HD info I want, it then will be reformatted or disconnected and kept there just in case I have missed something important I have forgotten about.

Other than that I am fully fit and turning 68 in a few days.

I think this make me the oldest regular on FP I wont mention the others not far behind me will I ????

Glad to be back hoping I can help as best I can

Keith

Hi Keith,
Welcome back. I was wondering how long you were going
to be gone.

Fallout.

Remember my computer knowledge is point and shoot basically I can get around it reasonably well but that is about my limit.

I will find out in a few days and let you know.

One thing I do know it has been a big job getting all the bits and pieces (programs) together and working.

Frank I though you might have a shot about my age.

Welcome back Keith. Your PC problems sound very typical of the problems most of us face when we try to upgrade any parts of our PCs
I'm looking at getting a more powerful processor but to do that I'll have to get another motherboard and this one is only a few years old ]. Thankfully though PC parts are getting cheaper by the day so it wont end up costing me an arm and a leg.

Other than that I am fully fit and turning 68 in a few days.
Big hugs to ya Keith for your upcoming birthday, it's something to be proud of because age means wisdom and wisdom is not learnt from books, it's learnt from living

*pokes rusty*

'only a few years old'

If it's more than 6 months old, it's considered ANCIENT

*licks 2 y/0 (but overclocked to 3.24GHz...decent, but not good 'nuff anyway) computer*

LOL waffle, I know but it just irks me when it seems like only yesterday when I upgraded this current machine (new MB and CPU-Athlon 2500+) and thinking I'd be set for a few years..... hang on, it IS a few years

That comes with old age too

That reminds me of one of a weird guy I know. He was ranting about how his AWESOME computer couldn't handle some new game he got. I asked him how old his computer was, an' he said, "It's pretty new...only about 5 years old." It turns out that it's an old 500MHz P3 machine! Yes, I did kick him rather hard

Rusty- Check your motherboard's manual or website to find out the processors it supports. Chances are you can find a faster processor for cheap, but you may want to update your technology all around with a newer machine all around.

Need any help, ask away. Plenty of us here can help you out
