I would hazard a guess that the thief decided to chop off 1 inch from his stick, thinking it would grow. Thus whoever had the shorter stick later was identified as the thief.

A man was traveling when he came apon a town with a small inn. When he got there, he asked for a room to rest for the night. He was then told that the inn was having problems with a theif. They knew that it was someone staying at the inn, but did not know who. The man said that he could solve the question, and could tell who the theif was.

He had everyone who was in the inn to take a stick, all of the same length, from his pack. He said that whoever the theif was, their stick would grow exactly 1 inch over night.

In the morning, when everyone brought their stick to compare, no one's stick had grown, but it was obvious who the theif was. How?

Here's one I heard a long time ago:

I think the egg came first babel... i got a few sites that say the egg did and have scientific evidence that the egg came first but we wont go there .. as for the other riddle... an umbrella.

Yeah skydiving with the unopened shute.

The gov did have a hand in it, although the way I heard it (from the aliens I heard gossiping during their coffe break during the brain probe) they had cut his parachute cords while they were looking for his $0.02.
