The word is aluminum, not aluminium. Humphry Davy, who discovered the element, first named it "alumium" in 1808. For some reason, he thought better of that and changed it to "aluminum" 4 years later. Americans adopted the new term, but the British disliked that it disrupted the -ium pattern created by such elements as sodium, calcium, and strontium. They added a vowel and a syllable. It is rightfully aluminum, since that is what its discoverer named it.


They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
