We're having our first real storm of the season right now, and yesterday I replaced my wiper blades because it was getting to the point where turning them on actually decreased visibility. But now I'm stuck with old wiper blades, and I don't know what to do with them.

I can't bring myself to just throw them away, since there's so much metal (I think they are aluminum). Can they be recycled? I searched online and I couldn't find any information on recycling old wiper blades. I guess I could just bring them down to the recycling center and ask if they'll take them....

Might call up a jiffy lube ect and ask them if they happen to know? Or if they do anything with theirs .

Or use them as wings for an animatronic bat for halloween?

I'd never thought of the wiper blades before I think we just replaced the rubber blade part on mine when we last did it, instead of the whole part that holds the blade.

^_^

In Aust it is 99% rubber compound except the little metal clip on the end. I have to replace mine NOW (sitting on back seat) and the old one will go into the recycle bin.

Babel depending where you are in Aust it is advisable to replace them just before the start of winter rains reason being the hot sun actually breaks down the rubber. There so cheap these days its worth it for the safety factor alone.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Thanks for the replies... Unfortunately with the wiper blades on my car, the rubber blade is firmly attached to the metal blade-holder thing, and it can't be removed without damaging both. Therefore, the whole thing has to be replaced and disposed of. I think I read that wiper-blade manufacturers used to make wiper blades where only the rubber part was replaced, but they weren't making enough money so they stopped that.

With my old wiper blades, I took the rubber part off and then put the other parts in the aluminum recycling... I'm pretty sure that's what they are made of. Hopefully the recycling plant will recycle them, and if not then I refuse to drive down to San Francisco or somewhere else that might have better recycling facilities to drop them off (there's only one recycling plant in my county).

Hmm. Last time I replaced my wiper blades, the manager of the store I bought them from told me to just throw them away.

If you're recycling the metal, though, that's another story. The metal market is down lately (30 cents per pound for scrap aluminum here, $100 per ton of scrap steel), but recycling metal is still environmentally friendly (unless you have to drive 20 miles to do it).

Use a magnet to test if the metal from the blades is ferrous. If the magnet is attracted to the metal, then it's ferrous. If it's not attracted to the magnet (and thus non-ferrous), and is a silvery shiny color (you may have to scratch off the paint), then it's most likely aluminum. (Non-ferrous metals include gold, copper, aluminum, etc, etc. Ferrous metals include iron/steel, tin, etc). So if the magnet doesn't stick to your metal, throw it in the aluminum bin

I put a magnet up to them and there was no attraction at all, so I think it's safe to say they are aluminum. The recycling got picked up this morning anyway, so it's too late if they weren't.

heaved = puked/vomited/upchucked etc.

but the scottish reference generally involves the known cheapness and tight fistedness when it comes to anything involving money. But, in this household its generally switched out with jewish since my husband is jewish (and I've got scottish blood so I have the scottish side, but its pretty diluted as I love spending money lol)

at least thats what it means from where I'm from.

And tim - don't remind me - my truck is going in next week to get looked at - either the suspension or the wheel bearing is shot - which is sad since its an 07 truck with 20K on the darn thing. Of course, it is a junker suzuki until the lawsuit from my accident in may settles...

So I'll get the suspension looked at and get some winter blades for all three wipers (front and back) as well as apply rain-x and better washer fluid..
